The Gut Microbiome & Joint Health

The Gut Microbiome and Joint Health module is a cutting edge exploration of how the 100trillion microbes in a human gut can influence immune responses, metabolic pathways and inflammatory cascades.

In particular the module discusses  dybiosis, and its relationship to a ‘leaky gut’, chronic inflammation and various autoimmune conditions. The gut microbiome is increasingly implicated in the genesis of chronic low grade inflammatory disorders such as Axial Spondyloarthropathy, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis and possibly osteoarthritis.

The module explores the difference between a healthy gut and one with dysbiosis and explains why athlete diets may predispose them to altered gut microbiomes. It provides practical interventions to optimise the microbiome for joint, musculoskeletal and bone health, based on the current available science.  Possible future interventions to manage conditions related to a dysbiotic gut microbiome are discussed.
