Eight percent of women with functioning ovaries experience some menopausal symptoms, with 25% having their quality of life severely impacted. Symptoms may last up to a decade and typically start in the 40’s when periods are still present.
This module presents a broad range of information about menopause, including detailed explanation of the hormonal changes occurring, the common symptoms and signs, and associated conditions which may occur. Whilst we are familiar with an increased risk of osteoporosis after menopause, there is emerging data that some menopausal symptoms are positively correlated with an increased risk of heart disease and dementia.
A range of potential treatments for menopausal symptoms are presented and the benefits of exercise, particularly weight and load bearing training along with medication options are discussed in detail. The module contains case studies and questions to aid deep learning.
