Mental Health in Athletes


Improved awareness of issues surrounding mental health in athletes has resulted from a number of high profile incidents in the media over the last few years. This module aims improve understanding of the prevalence of mental health issues in this population, including the risk factors, and barriers and facilitators to elite athletes seeking help. The specific diagnoses, such as anxiety and depression, and causes of psychosis are discussed. Further, a range of appropriate screening tools to use in clinical practice are made available. This module discusses the myths and facts surrounding suicide and concludes with the psychological benefits of sport and exercise.
